About me
My name is Casten (Casper) Pigman. I began hunting at an early age. When I was very young my dad bought the family a dog that he had every intention of training as a hunting dog but 'ol Zeke, a Golden Retriever, ended up only a wonderful and loved family pet. As the years went by, my love and desire to hunt continued to grow. In my late teens I was actively hunting waterfowl and had multiple instances where I was unable to recover my game. I began dreaming that if Zeke was young he would have been an awesome retriever. On one mid morning duck hunt I had shot one duck that landed out in the middle of the pond. As I waded out to retrieve it, I had to stop short as the water was just too deep for me to go any further. Frustration set in knowing that the bird was only feet away from me and there was nothing I could do but will it to come to me. It was then I told myself I was never going hunting without a dog again.
My first hunting companion was the ever-faithful Labrador Retriever. Sidney gave me 5 wonderful years of duck hunting. When the climate changed and drought set in the water wasn't there to bring the ducks so we began hunting a new kind of bird. My friend Gary knew of a place that was supposed to hold chukars so we made a date and headed out one cold Saturday morning. Sidney, having never hunted any upland game (other than some quail we chased around near a favorite duck hunting area), hunted well and found covey after covey of chukars. It took several more trips to this area before we shot our first chukars. Her energy and enthusiasm was good but mine was greater. I started longing for something better. This area is where I got my first introduction to the German Shorthair. Gary's old Springer had become too old to hunt so he had decided to get himself a German Shorthair. I had read about this breed, and other pointers in "GunDog Magazine". I was intrigued to know more about this breed and began researching the breeds history. After months of countless hour of reading and Internet searches, I decided that this was the breed I was destined to have.
